Less ballyhooed than Coral Gables, Coconut Grove, and some of the other moneyed communities in the Miami area, the quiet, affluent suburban village of Pinecrest has nonetheless attracted its own fair share of high-profile residents, including Jeff Bezos (it’s where he went to high school), Dwyane Wade, Timbaland, and Marc Anthony.
Another of the unsung village’s well-known residents now looking to make an exit is Dominican-born Boston Red Sox legend David “Big Papi” Ortiz, who has tossed his custom-built contemporary mansion on the market at $12.5 million. The striking, light-filled home is available through Michael Martinez of ONE Sotheby’s International Realty.
Priced more than two million dollars above the next most expensive listing in the village, Ortiz is looking to hit a real estate home run. Should the celebrated clutch hitter get anywhere near his asking price, it will shatter the record for the highest amount ever paid for a single-family home in Pinecrest, behind the $10.5 million that 23-year-old Miami Heat guard Tyler Herro threw down late last year for his brand-spanking-new mansion.
The three-time World Series champion and ten-time All Star, inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame last year, the first year of his eligibility, and his wife, Tiffany Ortiz, paid $1.5. million for the one-acre plot in 2016, the year he retired. On the pancake-flat parcel they built an ultra-contemporary home, completed in 2019, with five bedrooms and six bathrooms, plus a couple more powder rooms, within its almost 10,200 square feet.
With multiple seating areas, a grand piano, and lofty ceilings, the great room is big enough to serve as the lobby of a swanky boutique hotel, while the top-end eat-in kitchen sports a huge imported range that all by itself probably cost as much as a pretty nice condo in Tampa. There’s a wet bar in the outer space-themed eight-seat home theater and the so-called “Boom Boom” sports bar features a nine-screen panel of HD televisions above another bar.
The ample proportions of the living and entertaining spaces continue into the the guest and family bedrooms, each a spacious two-story suite with a private bath. The ground floor sitting area of each suite spills out to the gardens, while the sleeping chamber is located up a private staircase. The primary suite is also a two-story affair with a private lounge. One of the suite’s two baths has a massive 16-foot-wide shower behind a sheet of glass and in the upstairs sleeping area, a hidden television drops out of the ceiling at the touch of a button.
Enveloped in lush tropical trees and foliage, the grounds offer evergreen sweeps of fake turf — one of them with a trio of bleacher seats, presumably from Boston’s Fenway Park — deep loggias for shaded relaxing, and an inviting swimming pool and spa surrounded by broad stone terracing.
As has come to be expected of a home of in this price range, it’s jam-packed with state-of-the-art technologies that include a comprehensive home automation with touch-pad control of just about everything, including audio, visual and security systems as well as exterior water and fire features. Other creature comforts called out in marketing material include full-height walls of impact glass, an elevator, a bedroom for staff, a generator for power outages, a total of three fire pits, and a three-car garage large enough to accommodate lifts that would allow it to fit half a dozen luxury vehicles.
The first to report on the brand-new listing, The Wall Street Journal dug up legal documents that show the Ortizes are in the process of getting a divorce. However, in an email to WSJ Ortiz stated they have decided to sell because their children are all grown.
