Tesla Steals Super Bowl Spotlight Without Spending a Dime

2023-02-15 16:02:36 By : Ms. Lin Li

A 30-second commercial during the Super Bowl costs approximately $7 million, and the legacy brands were paying up for the big game. But, it was Tesla that was cashing in. According to Google Trends, Tesla, Model Y, and Model 3 were hot topics during the game.

The undisputed king of electric vehicles, which doesn't spend a dime on advertising, was getting all the attention as legacy brands promoted their (slow) transition to EVs. Tesla did appear in the game to make matters worse for those old-school brands. The face of Tesla, Elon Musk, scored some face time during the broadcast. The Tesla CEO, sporting a Doge Coin t-shirt, was spotted watching the game from a private box.

General Motors aired a one-minute ad in conjunction with Netflix. Will Ferrell starts the commercial by stating, "General Motors is going electric." Well, better late than never. Ironically, he is surrounded by zombies while saying the line, which could signify just how behind GM is; however, the ad states that more EVs will be in Netflix-produced shows and movies.

Dodge also produced a one-minute ad, at the cost of $14 million, to advertise their Ram 1500 Rev, a truck not slated to be on the road until well after the next Super Bowl in late 2024. Titled: Premature Electrification, the commercial was cringe-worthy, awkwardly trying to link medical conditions with electric vehicle myths.

A Tesla did appear during the Super Bowl festivities in a Popeyes ad. There's no doubt it was a Tesla, but some post-production editing was done to make the vehicle described as "electric, of course," not a billboard for the automaker. The side repeaters were removed, and the door handles were altered.

One commercial was unmistakably the world leader in electric vehicles but was a negative spot. The Dawn Project, a self-proclaimed safety advocate group, paid for a smear campaign aimed at Tesla's Full Self-Driving (FSD) system. The 30-second ad aired in Washington D.C. and some other state capitals, including Austin, Tallahassee, Albany, Atlanta and Sacramento. Dan O'Dowd, the founder of the Dawn Project, funded the ad. He is also the CEO of Green Hill Software, a company working on its automated driving systems. By the way, Teslas with Autopilot engaged are shown to be ten times safer than human-piloted cars.

As Musk enjoyed the game, the number of Google searches for his car company skyrocketed. That could mean a repeat performance of last year when Tesla reported a significant spike in orders after the Super Bowl. The competition must keep advertising - on Tesla's behalf.

The Northern tundra of Norway played host to an electrifying showdown as Motor Magazine pitted the latest and greatest electric vehicles against each other in a grueling test of winter endurance. With bone-chilling temperatures, only the bravest and most efficient cars could cross the finish line. However, the Tesla Model S was the clear winner when the dust and snowflakes settled.

This sleek electric sedan not only braved the frigid temperatures but also shattered the previous winter range record, reaching a whopping 530 kilometers (329 miles) on a single charge. While other vehicles struggled to maintain their range, the Model S powered on, proving once and for all that electric cars can handle anything Mother Nature throws their way. It's worth mentioning that the Model S had a slight disadvantage from the get-go - due to a technical issue, the battery could only be charged to 98%.

As expected, the harsh winter weather took a toll on the other cars in the test. Most cars stopped much earlier than expected, but the Model S saw one of the lowest range deviations at just 16%. The Model X Plaid was second with 444 kilometers (276 miles) and an 18% deviation. Meanwhile, the Toyota bZ4X had the most considerable discrepancy, with a deviation of over 35% and just 323 kilometers (201 miles) driven. Oddly enough, Toyota did not provide its all-wheel drive version of the bZ4X. Subaru's Solterra, the twin to the bZ4X, also did not offer an all-wheel drive edition.

The winter range test also saw a significant number of cars from China, with 12 of the test cars hailing from the country. From the affordable MG4 and BYD Atto to the luxury SUV Voyah Free, Chinese electric cars are making a big splash in the industry. These cars prove development in the electric car industry is moving fast, and China is at the forefront.

Winter is no friend to electric cars. Electric heaters and heat pumps work overtime, snow drifts make the roads unpredictable, and drivers are left counting down the miles until they need to reach a charging station. This test provides a real-world look at how electric cars perform in harsh winter weather, and it's clear that the Tesla Model S is one of the best in the business.

It's like spotting Bigfoot. Every time Tesla's Cybertruck appears in the wild (video), it generates millions of views and a lot of conversation. The photographic evidence also offers some surprises. This should not be a shock considering Tesla's Chief Designer, Franz von Holzhausen, has said that some elements of the Cybertruck still have not been revealed.

A recent picture posted by @greggertruck gave us a good look at the front of the highly anticipated, futuristic-looking vehicle. While Tesla is near production, there are still some tweaks for the final product. You can assume one of those weeks will be to the massive windshield wiper. Elon Musk has said it would not be part of the final production, however, the giant blade is still present, as shown in the photo.

Musk is not a fan of the wiper that spans the entire windshield. Over a year ago, he tweeted: The wiper is what troubles me most. No easy solution. Deployable wiper that stows in front trunk would be ideal, but complex.

The Cybertruck appears to have a slightly different front bumper design in this photo compared to previous prototypes. The lightbar above the windshield also remains a mystery. Early alpha prototypes included a full-width light above the windshield. However, in many states lights above the windshield can not be used on public roads. Tesla could face some challenges in keeping this lightbar in the production version of the vehicle.

4 wheel steering Cybertruck is sick! ? pic.twitter.com/WAlCTIBxWi

Meanwhile, a recent video posted on Twitter by TokyoTesla has been viewed over 8 million times. At first glance, it appears to show the Cybertruck taking a spin, but upon closer inspection, it can be seen that the back wheels are turning in unison with the front wheels, suggesting that the Cybertruck will have four-wheel steering.

While four-wheel steering is not a new technology, it was not well received in the automotive world in the 1980s when it was introduced by various brands, including BMW, Porsche, Acura, Nissan, and Renault. However, the competition is now introducing four-wheel steering in their electric vehicles, such as the Hummer, which claims to allow for a better off-road experience, and the Silverado, as well as Hyundai's IONIQ 5.

In addition to the four-wheel steering, the Cybertruck will also have advanced air suspension, similar to the Model X. The Model X can have a ground clearance as low as 5.4 inches or as high as 8.1 inches. At the same time, the Cybertruck appears to be very low in the four-wheel steering video, but other videos and pictures show it to be considerably higher.

Finally, the taillights will be a full red bar that stretches the tailgate length, as Elon Musk confirmed on Twitter, despite earlier videos only showing two lights on the ends.

The limited quantity of Cybertrucks is expected to be released this year, with ramp-up production not taking place until 2024.
